The assessment process is for overseas qualified dentists with qualifications that do not meet the requirements for registration with the Dental Board of Australia. It is designed to assess your knowledge, judgement, clinical skills, and professional competence.

Initial Assessment

The initial assessment is the first stage of the dental practitioner assessment process. It determines your eligibility to sit the written examination by assessing your professional qualifications, work experience, registration history, and good standing.

To be eligible to apply for an initial assessment you must:

Hold a four-year, full time university dental degree, or diploma, from a recognised university

Have held full and unrestricted registration or licence in either your home country, or country of training, with no withdrawal of registration.

Written Examination

The written examination is the second stage of the dental practitioner assessment process. It determines you ‘know how’ to practise dentistry in Australia by assessing your:

Knowledge of the science and practice of dentistry

Clinical judgement and reasoning skills relevant to dental practice in Australia.

Written Exams are conducted by Pearson VUE at various test centres around the world. It is held twice a year, usually in March and September.

A two-day examination testing your application of knowledge to clinical practice.

Timeframe: 5 months from application period to results release (approximately)

Practical Examination

The practical examination is the last stage of the dental practitioner assessment process. It is a platform for you to show that you are competent to practise safely as a dentist in Australia.

The examination is held over two days: a technical skills day and a clinical skills day. It assesses you across the range of the Professional competencies of the newly qualified dentist. You are eligible to sit the practical examination within three years of completion of your written examination.

You are eligible to apply for registration with the Dental Board of Australia once you successfully complete the practical examination.
